What I do know is that when Bobby made it to the majors to stay in 1969 he always gave his all, and he became one heck of a player. Still, all you heard was how Mickey had been his idol growing up, how both came from Oklahoma, how both came up as shortstops, how both were recruited and signed by the same scout. From the day he got to Yankee Stadium, people started talking about how Bobby was a big deal, how he was going to be the “next Mantle.” Nobody needed that kind of pressure or hype. I was just kidding, but maybe it unsettled him a bit, I don’t know. Him that he better not get too comfortable in the cage, that my players needed the swings. We had a veteran team, and we were in the middle of a pennant race. Heck, he was a nervous kid, only 18 years old, just out of high school. Tom Greenwade, the Yankees scout who ended up signing Bobby, brought Bobby up from Oklahoma City to Municipal Stadium before our game, to meet the guys and put on a Yankee uniform and take some batting practice. But I remember meeting him a year earlier when I was a rookie manager, and we were in Kansas City. When he first came to the Yankees for a cup of coffee in 1965, I was gone. He’s been a great friend all these years, a true Yankee. I don’t know too many people I’d rather know even if I already know them.
